Football Returns
To ‘Normal’

High school football returns to normal, hopefully, Fri., Aug. 20.
Last year’s Covid season featured shortened schedules, social distancing, masks and limited ticket sales.
This year, a regular ten game schedule returns, with no restrictions, and four teams going to the play-offs from each region, compared to last years’ two. Of course, that could change as Covid cases continue to rise.
Locally, Saluda opens the season at old rival Strom Thurmond, Batesburg-Leesville travels to Ridge Spring-Monetta and King Academy will play at Faith Christian in Summerville.
Saluda played in the Greenwood Jamboree Fri., Aug. 13, and defeated 3-A Emerald 21-13. Tailback Montrevious Baker scored two touchdowns, and Tyleke Mathis scored another out of the Wildcat. Sam Espinoza kicked two extra points and Diego Licea kicked one.
In two, ten-minute quarters, Saluda quarterback Jonah McCary threw for  161 yards. Mathis  caught  five passes for 109 yards. Baker rushed for 66 yards.
After winning the State Championship in 2019 with a senior dominated team, the Tigers finished 3-3 in the 2020 Covid year, with a roster loaded with sophomores.
Those 20 sophomores are now experienced juniors.
The Tigers are still young, with only eight seniors, and some freshmen and sophomores will see plenty of action.
The region will be tough again, with foes Batesburg-Leesville, Newberry, Gray Collegiate, Eau Claire and Columbia.

LIONS SCHOLARSHIP - The Saluda Lions Club Selected Karra Canady as the 2021 R B Rogers Scholarship recipient. At the July meeting President Carey Bedenbaugh presented her with a $1000 check for her continuing education.
