Saluda Middle School Reading Fair- Reading to Succeed

Saluda Middle School sponsored their first Reading Fair in March.  The purpose of the competition was to provide students in grades 6-8 the opportunity to share their favorite fictional book through a project/storyboard display. With the implementation of the South Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards and Read to Succeed, a new emphasis has been placed on student mastery of the skills and concepts necessary to read complex texts at each grade level, write texts using evidence, and participate in collegial discussions about texts. In support of our state standards, the goal of the SMS Reading Fair is to enhance and encourage reading at all grade levels in hopes that students will experience a deeper enjoyment from reading and develop a lifelong love of reading.
On Thursday, March 15 in conjunction with the Saluda Middle School PTO meeting, grade level winners were recognized and storyboards were displayed for parents and community members to view. The top two winners from each grade level were announced and presented a Kindle Fire and $25.00 gift card from Amazon to purchase eBooks.  Saluda Middle School would like to thank our generous community sponsors who made it possible for us to purchase eight Kindle Fires: Tidwell’s, CB Forrest and Son, Southern Roots, The Added Touch, Frank Herlong, Jacqueline Ballard, RSW Enterprises, Eidson’s Sports, Mig’s, C & C Specialty Products, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade level teams and related arts at Saluda Middle School.  Judges for the competition were:  Jill Altman, Deborah Bailey, Jean Covar, Dr. Abbey Duggins, April Ergle, Meredith Miller-Rikar, Yoland Moore, and Jennifer Thomas.
Congratulations on a job well done by all SMS students who participated in the reading fair. Grade level winners and the People Choice Winners weree treated to a pizza party on Friday, March 23.
