By Mary Alice Quattlebaum

On Tuesday, September 5, the 2017-18 Saluda County School District Teachers of the Year and 2017 Retirees were honored at a banquet held at the Saluda Educational Complex.
Dr. Harvey Livingston, Superintendent welcomed everyone for coming in support of those being honored.  Board Chairperson, Mrs. Arlene Puryear gave the Invocation. Ms. Macy Crawford, an 11th grade student at Saluda High School, provided the entertainment.
After a wonderful dinner, Mrs. Erin Fox, State Teacher of the Year served as keynote speaker.  Those in attendance were entertained with Southern humor, folksy wisdom along with an inspirational and motivational speech on the calling of being a teacher.  An English teacher from Gaffney, SC, Erin pulls from her dramatic, dance and musical background to create dynamic lessons and units for her students. She strives to teach them “an inner drive” that will carry them further than just a 5K course, classroom, or school year.
Principals and Directors introduced and recognized each of the 2017 Retirees with a gift of appreciation for their many years of service to the district.  The 2017 retirees are:  Brenda Eidson, Beverly Funderburk, Wayne Grice, Jimmy Holloway, Shelia Myers, Daylene Pitts, Karen Rushton, June Wall, Christine Webb, and Judy White.  The 2017-18 Teachers of the Year recognized were Chloe Young, Saluda Primary School; Sandra Boozer, Saluda Elementary School; Kelly Morse, Hollywood Elementary School; Claire Sample, Saluda Middle School; and Heather Harmon, Saluda High School.  Mr. Jim Fisher, President of First Citizens Bank of Saluda which co-partners with Saluda County Schools Teacher for the Year program gave each Teacher of the Year a monetary gift.   On behalf of the Board of Trustees and District, Dr. Harvey Livingston presented each teacher with a plaque.
The grand finale of the night was the announcement of Heather Harmon being selected as District Teacher of the Year.  As District Teacher of the Year for Saluda County Schools, Mrs. Harmon will receive a check from the State Department of Education for $1000 and go on to represent the district as she competes for State Teacher of the Year.
A special thank you and congratulations to our Retirees and Teachers of the Year.  May you have many more fulfilling days.
